Call For Papers

The Workshop on Polar Coding will be held in conjunction with IEEE WCNC 2018, Barcelona, Spain, 15-18 April 2018.Channel coding in future wireless networks is facing novel challenges due to largely extended service classes and scenarios, as compared to existing networks. In 5G, for example, mobile broadband communications, machine-type communications and high-reliability low-latency communications have very different requirements on the code lengths and rates, and on throughput and decoder complexity. Turbo codes and low-density parity-check codes, the currently dominating code classes, perform well in some of these regimes but fail to cover the whole range.Polar codes, on the other hand, provide many features that make them promising candidates: rate-adaptation is naturally provided, length adaptation may be accomplished by puncturing and shortening; fast successive-cancellation decoding and powerful list decoding is available; and high-throughput hardware implementations have been proposed. Furthermore, there are generalisations beyond the original polar code constructions, and there various options to provide for incremental redundancy and hybrid automatic repeat request. The recent adoption of polar codes in 5G clearly shows their high potential.Polar codes are a very young class of codes, and despite the excellent progress in the theory and practice of polar coding, many problems are still open. This workshop is bringing together researchers from industry and academia to showcase the state of the art of polar coding and identify the remaining research problems to solve. Theory and code design as well as decoding algorithms and hardware implementations are being covered.Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following:

  • Construction and design of polar codes
  • Hardware implementation of polar decoders
  • Non-binary polar codes
  • Incremental redundancy and HARQ with polar codes
  • Fast decoding algorithms
  • High-performance decoding algorithms
  • Length-adaptation of polar codes
  • Polar-coded modulation
  • Polar coding for fading channels
  • Structural properties of polar codes

The IEEE WCNC Polar Coding Workshop will feature three keynotes on code design and hardware implementation:    Erdal Arıkan, Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkey    Tong Wen, Huawei Technologies, Canada    Andreas Peter Burg, EPFL, Lausanne, SwitzerlandThe workshop accepts only novel previously unpublished papers. All submissions have to be in English with a maximum length of six printed pages (10 point font) including figures, using the IEEE templates.Conference web site: http://wcnc2018.ieee-wcnc.org/workshop/polar-coding-future-networks-theory-and-practice
